Once Part of the Community, Always Part of the Community
Shirley and Peggy have very special and unique connections to Ecumenical Retirement Community as the campus, its services and caring staff have been a part of their life story. They are examples of how, once you experience Ecumenical, the community will always be here for you.
Shirley is a former co-worker, now a resident. She worked in Building 2 as an aid many years ago. Her campus experiences came full circle when she moved into Building 2 (Personal Care) as a resident. Now two and a half years after moving in, she is a friendly face in Independent Living. As an Ambassador, she shows new residents around and shares important things to know about living there.
“I am their friend as they get situated, and then I keep being their friend,” said Shirley with a smile. “I’m here if they need me.”
In addition to being an Ambassador, Shirley often joins the bus trips that go shopping and enjoys spending time in the common living room areas doing word search puzzles and visiting with other residents and guests who are coming and going.
One of those resident-friends is Peggy—a second generation resident and newer neighbor!
Years ago, when Peggy was looking for a retirement living community for her own parents, she found Ecumenical. At that time, the community, levels of care, good, quality meals and socialization opportunities helped her feel comfortable with the decision for her mother and father. So recently when it came time for her to move, she knew where to look. The larger house, where she raised her four sons, was getting to be too much after the death of her husband, Moving somewhere she knew provided some comfort. Although still a little nervous at first, Peggy has made the Independent Living neighborhood home, has many friends, and is active in activities—including a card group that plays pinocle.
“I see a big difference in Peggy,” described Shirley, Peggy’s Ambassador. “When she first came, she was very shy. It can be a lot when you first move in. It’s nice to see her really doing well.”
“What makes Ecumenical feel welcoming to me is the people,” said Peggy. “Everyone is happy that they are here. When I go up to a group and ask to join, they always say yes, and I know that Shirley and others who have experience will be able to answer my questions.”
