Joy in Friendship: The Story of the Fab Four

Elaine, Betty, Martha and Bonnie are best friends and have the reputation around Ecumenical Retirement Community’s campus as the “Fab Four.” Despite only knowing each other for only a few months to just over two years, they came into each other’s lives at a time they needed the friendship and companionship the most—after making the transition to retirement living for the first time, after moving from another community to Ecumenical or not having family that lives close.

These transitions and feelings can be isolating, but not on Elaine’s watch!

Elaine is an ambassador though the campus Ambassador Program. Through the program, all new residents are paired with a current resident to help make the transition a positive experience and show them the ropes. Elaine was the ambassador for all her new best friends when they moved in. “It’s important for them to know there are friendly people here for them to meet and know,” she emphasized. “Once I had them, I’ve kept them close and won’t let them go,” she said smiling.

“I feel very fortunate to have gotten together with this group,” described Bonnie. “I’m not sure how it happened exactly, but it’s wonderful knowing I have friends I can go to for anything.”

Betty is the oldest in the group at the age of 96, and her favorite Fab Four activity is the daily walks, especially on nice days when they can be outside on the beautiful campus walking paths.

The Fab Four also are often seen attending church services, enjoying meals and participating in fitness classes together. (Volleyball is a favorite.) Always smiling and laughing no matter the activity.

“We always say hello and smile and try to involve other people in the activities,” explained Elaine. “I have lots of groups of friends here—I have a group I do puzzles with; another group of friends plays cards. I’m always making friends!”

When asked why friendship is important, Martha quickly said “how we help each other makes us good friends.” The others added they have a shared, positive outlook, “We try to stay positive and eliminate the negative,” said Elaine, “a lot of people don’t follow those rules, but there is a lot to be grateful for.”

“At Ecumenical, everyone is so friendly and everyone knows your name,” added Martha. “I felt like I belonged to the community right away.”
